What is a Chief Executive Officer?

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is an organizational position within a corporation that has the responsibility of overseeing the strategic planning of the organization as well as organizing the activities of people within the organization to implement such plans. The chief executive officer is also the principal link between the board of directors and the corporation.

  • Making important decisions: From major financial decisions and fundraising to key personnel appointments and market entry strategies.
  • Controlling operations and resources: Making sure that people, finances, and time of the firm are focused on the right things.
  • Being the main point of contact for the board of directors: Conveying information about the firm’s performance, risks, and strategy changes to the board, and often sitting on the board as well (sometimes as its chairman).
