Contra Revenue

What is Contra Revenue?

Contra revenues represent amounts that subtract from the total sales revenues of a business to calculate the net revenues of the company. While regular revenues have a credit balance, contra revenues are entered into an accounting record with a debit balance that is contrary to revenues.

In simple terms, contra revenue is revenue that is subtracted from gross sales because the company did not end up keeping all the money from the original sale.

What is a Contra Revenue Account?

A contra-revenue account is one where there is a revenue account having a debit balance (whereas normally, revenue accounts have credit balances). This means that the normal credit balance of a revenue account is contrary to the debit balance.

A contra-revenue account helps to show how much was initially sold and also how those revenues were reduced to give the net sales revenue.

This is important as it ensures that the gross revenue and reductions in gross revenue remain separate within the accounting records and are not combined into one amount. It ensures that there is clarity about:

  • Gross revenue: The total sales without any reductions
  • Net revenue: What ends up on the income statement after reductions
Net Revenue=Gross Revenue- Contra Revenue

For example, if a company has gross sales of $100,000 and sales returns and discounts of $5,000, its net revenue is $95,000.

Contra Revenue Accounts Examples

These are the common contra-revenue account examples:

  • Sales returns: Records the value of goods returned by customers for refund or credit. This is the most common contra-revenue account for product-based businesses.
  • Sales allowances: Used when a customer keeps a product but receives a partial refund or credit and does not formally return the product.
  • Sales discount: Tracks discounts provided to customers, frequently in connection with early payment terms or promotional pricing at checkout.
  • Rebates: Tracks refunds provided to customers after a completed purchase, often associated with volume-based incentives, loyalty programs, or manufacturer promotions.
